Design of Building Systems Is Systematically Sequenced and Interdisciplinarily Coordinated

3.1 Architectural Design Topics 3.1.1 Space Planning and Functional Organization

3.1.1 Space Planning and Functional Organization

Effective architectural design begins with a deep understanding of how spaces function, relate to each other, and support the building’s overall purpose. Space planning and functional organization form the core of this understanding, serving as the foundation for all subsequent design decisions—whether related to aesthetics, structure, services, or compliance.

This group of topics focuses on the logical arrangement of spaces within the building and their relationship to circulation systems, access points, site features, and functional zoning. A well-organized spatial layout enhances user experience, improves operational efficiency, supports code compliance, and facilitates coordination with other disciplines.

Prior to developing elevations, detailing materials, or engaging in structural and MEP integration, architects must ensure that the interior layout is functionally sound and that vertical and horizontal circulation is well-integrated and code-compliant.
